Summer season outfit inspiration: part 2

It feels so good to say that summer is here at last. Let’s hope it’s here to stay because the number of outdoor events on the Feather & Stitch calendar is growing exponentially. This week I’m focusing on the more relaxed events we’re attending because putting a stylish yet casual outfit together requires the same careful consideration as a major social occasion, so today we’re drawing the fine line between being over or under done.

We’re really looking forward to the school Sports Day at the end of June; call it our competitive nature but we want to win style points well as the adult egg and spoon race. To wit we are eyeing the delicious Des Petits Hauts strappy silk dresses in a watermelon or star print and our flat Billi Bi sandals (we didn’t want to do the wheelbarrow race anyway). Add a cropped jacket or longline cardi if it’s a cool day.

This summer we’re also heading to a family friendly festival with a group of friends and all our children in tow. I toyed with the idea of wearing a bohemian dress but the reality is a pair of relaxed DL1961 boyfriend jeans and a Rails sleeveless Britt shirt are going to be far more practical on the day and considerably easier to launder after the event (insert ice-cream spills and hot dog stains here). Speaking of practicality, I’m going to pair this outfit with the leather sky blue Liebeskind Biggi bag; it’s zippered, has oodles of space and tassles. What more could a festival-going mum ask for?

Lastly we’re planning a few day trips and picnics throughout the summer holidays and need an outfit that can be styled any which way, which is why I’m choosing the Des Petits Hauts Kimoli Dress for these occasions. It’s made from 100% cotton so it will be cool even on the stickiest days. The ecru colour tones beautifully with a hint of tan, plus it layers beautifully over skinny jeans. Put simply, it’s a great all-rounder.

Summer Prints

Summer is the perfect time to embrace print in all it’s glorious forms and this season we have a superb collection ranging from classic breton stripes from By Malene Birger and checked shirts from Rails LA, to geometric patterns from new Danish brand Munthe and the inspired geo print exclusively from cult London brand Pyrus.

A printed top is an ideal way to pep up your summer look and will fit seamlessly into your existing wardrobe providing new interest to your outfit choices. Being constructed from lightweight fabric they are also ideally suited to layering either under a blazer, cardigan or sweater depending on the occasion.

Printed trousers have been around for several seasons now and their popularity shows no sign of slowing. The success of printed trousers lies in their versatility and the fact they are incredibly easy to style. The bravest among us will go head-to-toe in one print giving the impression of a jumpsuit while retaining the option to wear each piece separately, but it is just as chic to pair printed trousers with a plain top to retain a beautiful aesthetic.

While in winter it is perfectly acceptable to reach for the plain LBD, for social occasions in summer a style conscious woman really must have other options available to her; this is where the printed dress comes into it’s own. Being eye catching in their own right these dresses are designed to provide the wearer with demure coverage, the message conveyed is both fun and feminine without being overtly sexy. That being said… we still love the little black printed numbers from Des Petits Hauts this season, they’re floaty and punctuated with the prettiest watermelon and star details.

The Essential Shirt

PAGE3HUNTERPATRIOT copy

Our Fashion Editor Emma, guides you through styling that essential wardrobe piece – the shirt.

“I once heard a woman declare that she never wears shirts. The fact that we remain good friends is testament to her many other outstanding qualities, but to this day I remain baffled as to why she refuses to wear this main stay of functionality and form.

Personally I love a good shirt and I’ve been collecting them for years. I own denim shirts, linen shirts, cotton shirts, silk shirts, chambray shirts and every other kind of inbetween shirts. What I love about them is their versatility. In summer you can tie them at the front and roll the sleeves to ¾ length and push them above the elbow for off duty appeal. In autumn they layer well under lightweight knits, then switch to heavy knits as the cold starts to bite. In spring I like to wear them half tucked in to feel the first warm breeze shoot up my back. It’s a delicious sensation.

Changing the look of a shirt from outfit to outfit is a simple process. One can be prim in the office with the buttons done up all the way and when finished with a statement necklace it will prevent the look becoming too severe. Or show a little va va voom at a casual lunch by unbuttoning the top three buttons and adding a long pendant necklace, you can even half turn up the collar for extra attitude. A longer shirt will look great tied at the front with a maxi skirt and a denim shirt can also double as a light summer jacket when the cuffs are folded just so.

This season Fiona has handpicked the best shirts from brands around the world for Feather & Stitch. I am particularly excited about the arrival of Californian brand Rails LA. Their shirts are being lauded by fashion pundits around the globe from Cara Delevingne to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and have had whole articles written about them in the national press including The Times. What do I think about them? Well, they are impossibly soft, require no ironing, fit like a dream and look equally good worn on their own or layered under knitwear. There are three plaid colour ways to choose from in store now as well as two denim shirts. Plaid is set to become this season’s run-away print and come winter I will be wearing mine layered over a denim shirt and under a sweater. When styling a denim shirt don’t be afraid to mix it with other shades of denim or play with texture, pairing it with something glamorous like the By Malene Birger Pollio sequin skirt will nail the casual party look that’s so popular right now.

Another shirt that has caught my eye is the Swildens Lontana shirt. It is a crisp, medium weight cotton with a little stretch and has a longer more generous length than many other shirts. The contrasting white collar and cuffs give it a considered appeal and it will look fantastic styled with a pencil skirt for the office or jeans for the weekend.

Lastly how could I leave out that most essential wardrobe basic, the classic white shirt? Custommade’s figure flattering white shirt is proof positive that well tailored style is always in demand. The elegant bib draws the eye up and the double turned cuffs add a professional touch. I’d wear this with the By Malene Birger Elenaso leather leggings and Samsoe & Samsoe Kimi monochrome oversized cardi.
