Summer season outfit inspiration: part 2

It feels so good to say that summer is here at last. Let’s hope it’s here to stay because the number of outdoor events on the Feather & Stitch calendar is growing exponentially. This week I’m focusing on the more relaxed events we’re attending because putting a stylish yet casual outfit together requires the same careful consideration as a major social occasion, so today we’re drawing the fine line between being over or under done.

We’re really looking forward to the school Sports Day at the end of June; call it our competitive nature but we want to win style points well as the adult egg and spoon race. To wit we are eyeing the delicious Des Petits Hauts strappy silk dresses in a watermelon or star print and our flat Billi Bi sandals (we didn’t want to do the wheelbarrow race anyway). Add a cropped jacket or longline cardi if it’s a cool day.

This summer we’re also heading to a family friendly festival with a group of friends and all our children in tow. I toyed with the idea of wearing a bohemian dress but the reality is a pair of relaxed DL1961 boyfriend jeans and a Rails sleeveless Britt shirt are going to be far more practical on the day and considerably easier to launder after the event (insert ice-cream spills and hot dog stains here). Speaking of practicality, I’m going to pair this outfit with the leather sky blue Liebeskind Biggi bag; it’s zippered, has oodles of space and tassles. What more could a festival-going mum ask for?

Lastly we’re planning a few day trips and picnics throughout the summer holidays and need an outfit that can be styled any which way, which is why I’m choosing the Des Petits Hauts Kimoli Dress for these occasions. It’s made from 100% cotton so it will be cool even on the stickiest days. The ecru colour tones beautifully with a hint of tan, plus it layers beautifully over skinny jeans. Put simply, it’s a great all-rounder.

Summer season outfit inspiration: part 1

The Chelsea Flower Show marks the start of the British summer social season and now it’s upon us we’ve been thinking long and hard about what we’re going to wear to the unmissable summer events on our 2015 calendar. First up are summer weddings, this year we’re bucking the trend of a dress and instead looking for silk separates like our Munthe silk trouser suit (available in cream or navy). A trouser suit will help you to stand out in a sea of dresses and the pieces can be worn separately to different events across the summer giving your wardrobe greater versatility. The matching silk blouse is also available as a tank with a racer back design, perfect for keeping cool on hot days. Wear with seriously great hair and heels, accessorise with our Becksondergaard O-Ida leather clutch purse.

Paired with Billi Bi flats (because we’ll be walking on grass and don’t want our heels to sink into the turf) this dress epitomises that cool insouciance so often lacking in the overly tight, restrictive attire race goers have been sporting of late. The key to wearing this look well is simplicity, the dress has impact enough so keep jewelry to a minimum (those Dior pearl earrings would be a dreamy match) and team it with a beautiful clutch.

Palm Print

PalmprinttextHistorically a palm print blouse would invoke images of lurid Hawaiian shirts and cocktails with equally generous measures of brolly and booze. Not so with Parisian label Swildens’ Menthe demi-sheer blouse which has been inspired by the palm trees of Goa.

This 100% silk blouse whispers of quiet refinement through it’s shadowy fronds and lined front panels. The only flesh on show is a shrouded hint glimpsed through the back as the blouse hangs demurely from your shoulder blades.

The buttons are covered by a double folded seam which add structure to the front of the blouse but raw cut strips of the printed silk are layered either side adding a lightness to the overall effect. This Swildens blouse runs true to size and is dry clean only.

Remembering Dirty Dancing

Des Petits Hauts Watermelon SweaterFor me it marked the start of adolescence. Everyone was talking about it. Everyone was trying to recreate the dance across the bridge. Everyone was quoting their favourite scene. Everyone wanted to be that girl at the end of the film, to be the incandescent dancer who no one could put in the corner. I think it appealed to our teenage selves because the storyline mirrored our own awkward awakenings because while most of us longed to be noticed, when it happened for real we were not the confident dancer on the stage we were the girl who carried the watermelon.

Fast forward twenty (+something) years and compared with the ever present grinding visual erotica that graces our screens it all seems rather innocent now. I think that’s what appealed to me when I saw this adorable sweater from the new Des Petits Hauts ss15 collection on our rails. The neutral base colour is offset by coral pink and gold glittered watermelons. There’s a slight scoop to the neckline and the whole effect is one of measured innocence with a dash of cool.

Here I’ve styled the sweater with a pair of simple washed grey jeans from our DL1961 collection. In the summer I will definitely be switching them up for a pair of the white Florence jeans for daytime wear and a pencil or full tulle skirt for evenings out. And I can assure you there’s no way I’ll be sitting in the corner.
