New label for AW16 takes boutique by Storm

Danish brand, Storm & Marie, is the latest label to hit the rails of Feather & Stitch.  Combining minimalist design with a rock-chic edge, the brand embodies the cool Scandinavian style that many of us covet and love.

The capsule collection is made up of beautiful silk pieces in russet tones; a key colour palette of the season. The pieces are individual enough to be mixed and matched with your basic staples, such as jeans or leather skirts, however also combine to make great outfits.

The orange Nadia silk dress has buttons down the front and a drawstring waistband. It looks great with black ankle boots and a slouchy cardigan in the day, or heels and gold accessories in the evening.

The Nadia silk trousers and top are luxurious with a fun twist. Featuring an afghan hound in copper tones against a black background, you certainly won’t spot anyone in the same outfit at the party. It’s a totally unique and retro design, printed on well-cut pieces. Wear together or play safe with black separates; or go bold with a clashing print, like the Wall shirt in a gingerbread colour.

Last and by no means least, the copper Fazela short sleeved top and long sleeved blouse will take you from summer to autumn; day to night. Wear at work with black trousers and gold accessories and make a statement in the evening with a leather or floaty skirt, a black blazer and a gold clutch.

We have an additional 1-2 pieces in store which aren’t on the website, so please do come and have a browse and a try on if you can. Shop the collection before it goes, as we’ve ordered a small selection to keep each piece relatively exclusive. Enjoy.

Summer season outfit inspiration: part 2

It feels so good to say that summer is here at last. Let’s hope it’s here to stay because the number of outdoor events on the Feather & Stitch calendar is growing exponentially. This week I’m focusing on the more relaxed events we’re attending because putting a stylish yet casual outfit together requires the same careful consideration as a major social occasion, so today we’re drawing the fine line between being over or under done.

We’re really looking forward to the school Sports Day at the end of June; call it our competitive nature but we want to win style points well as the adult egg and spoon race. To wit we are eyeing the delicious Des Petits Hauts strappy silk dresses in a watermelon or star print and our flat Billi Bi sandals (we didn’t want to do the wheelbarrow race anyway). Add a cropped jacket or longline cardi if it’s a cool day.

This summer we’re also heading to a family friendly festival with a group of friends and all our children in tow. I toyed with the idea of wearing a bohemian dress but the reality is a pair of relaxed DL1961 boyfriend jeans and a Rails sleeveless Britt shirt are going to be far more practical on the day and considerably easier to launder after the event (insert ice-cream spills and hot dog stains here). Speaking of practicality, I’m going to pair this outfit with the leather sky blue Liebeskind Biggi bag; it’s zippered, has oodles of space and tassles. What more could a festival-going mum ask for?

Lastly we’re planning a few day trips and picnics throughout the summer holidays and need an outfit that can be styled any which way, which is why I’m choosing the Des Petits Hauts Kimoli Dress for these occasions. It’s made from 100% cotton so it will be cool even on the stickiest days. The ecru colour tones beautifully with a hint of tan, plus it layers beautifully over skinny jeans. Put simply, it’s a great all-rounder.

Summer Prints

Summer is the perfect time to embrace print in all it’s glorious forms and this season we have a superb collection ranging from classic breton stripes from By Malene Birger and checked shirts from Rails LA, to geometric patterns from new Danish brand Munthe and the inspired geo print exclusively from cult London brand Pyrus.

A printed top is an ideal way to pep up your summer look and will fit seamlessly into your existing wardrobe providing new interest to your outfit choices. Being constructed from lightweight fabric they are also ideally suited to layering either under a blazer, cardigan or sweater depending on the occasion.

Printed trousers have been around for several seasons now and their popularity shows no sign of slowing. The success of printed trousers lies in their versatility and the fact they are incredibly easy to style. The bravest among us will go head-to-toe in one print giving the impression of a jumpsuit while retaining the option to wear each piece separately, but it is just as chic to pair printed trousers with a plain top to retain a beautiful aesthetic.

While in winter it is perfectly acceptable to reach for the plain LBD, for social occasions in summer a style conscious woman really must have other options available to her; this is where the printed dress comes into it’s own. Being eye catching in their own right these dresses are designed to provide the wearer with demure coverage, the message conveyed is both fun and feminine without being overtly sexy. That being said… we still love the little black printed numbers from Des Petits Hauts this season, they’re floaty and punctuated with the prettiest watermelon and star details.

Palm Print

PalmprinttextHistorically a palm print blouse would invoke images of lurid Hawaiian shirts and cocktails with equally generous measures of brolly and booze. Not so with Parisian label Swildens’ Menthe demi-sheer blouse which has been inspired by the palm trees of Goa.

This 100% silk blouse whispers of quiet refinement through it’s shadowy fronds and lined front panels. The only flesh on show is a shrouded hint glimpsed through the back as the blouse hangs demurely from your shoulder blades.

The buttons are covered by a double folded seam which add structure to the front of the blouse but raw cut strips of the printed silk are layered either side adding a lightness to the overall effect. This Swildens blouse runs true to size and is dry clean only.

Bestsellers are back in stock

We care a great deal about your opinion at Feather & Stitch HQ and so when we notice a particular brand or item in our collection is selling out fast we move heaven and earth to get more of what you love back on our rails. Happily some of our bestselling pieces from the SS15 collection are now back in stock in limited quantities. You may click on the images to link through to the website.

Des Petits Hauts is our go to brand for easy to wear classic feminine pieces and the 100% silk Muesli blouse is a case in point. The lace panel inserts lift this black blouse and give it a beautiful delicate edge, it’s perfect for a day-to-night look.

The braided gold detail running across the chest chimes well with the current 70’s revival trend and the fact that it’s 100% cotton (read machine washable ladies) makes it practical as well as chic.

How to pack the perfect capsule wardrobe

Easter weekend is the perfect time to get away from it all with a special someone for a few days, but with airlines charging ever more imaginative fees for handling baggage the packing part of ‘getting away from it all’ is actually pretty stressful. Gone are the days when you could simply throw everything you might need into a large suitcase and figure it out when you get there. Over time (and many adventurous buying trips) Fi has honed her ability to pack a perfect capsule wardrobe and now applies the same rules when packing for a weekend away with family and friends and we thought we’d share this knowledge with you.

The first rule: check the weather for your destination. Europe and North America can have wildly different and changeable climates at this time of year so use a weather app to get a good idea of what to expect. The second rule: choose your footwear first, limit yourself to two pairs and make them activity appropriate i.e. flats or comfortable heels for roaming the town, heels or on-trend sandals for hitting the town. Choosing footwear first also limits the options of what you can take that will go with them thereby instantly helping the decision process. Basically you’re building your outfit from the ground up. The third rule: make your outfits interchangeable. By this I mean pack items that will mix and match well. Ideally you need one stand out piece and at least two ways to wear it. Jeans are a must and a silk blouse always travels well.

Our founder Fi is off to Copenhagen this weekend and we quizzed her about what she’s taking from the Feather & Stitch SS15 collection. You can shop the looks via the pink links.

“Firstly I’m packing our Pyrus ‘Republic’ jacket. The bead work is so intricate and beautiful it doesn’t require a lot of accessorising. I’ll dress it down with DL1961 boyfriend jeans while travelling and then switch to the Florence ‘Neptune’ jeans when I want to kick my look up a notch.”

“Next I’ve chosen our Custommade silk blouse to layer underneath the Pyrus jacket. It’s not currently available online but it comes in two colours, pink and neutral. I’m opting for the pinker of the two as it tones brilliantly with the beadwork on the jacket. I’m also taking our simple yet timeless classic black silk blouse from Kokoon. This blouse is cut so expertly with it’s seductive wide neckline and perfectly pitched sleeve length, it’s impossible to not look good when you’re wearing it. If blessed with a warm day all I need is a Becksondergaard scarf and beaded bag to finish the look.”

“For cooler days I’m going to take a couple of our sweaters. I love the linear embellishment of the dark blue Munthe ‘Nabigale’ sweater, it looks like you’re wearing layers but it’s just a clever cut. I’ll definitely pair this sweater with the DL1961 Jeans in Neptune as this sweater lends itself to a more refined look.”

“Another option I’m taking is the gorgeous peach coloured slogan sweatshirt by Custommade. I’ve been living in mine this season, it’s just so comfortable and the bright pop of colour is great for spring days out when you don’t need a jacket.”

Outfit of the week – spring monochrome

MonochromeText

We all have our favourite black pieces in our wardrobe, a little black dress, a pair of jeans, a top that suits every occasion. But come springtime black can feel a little heavy, a bit out of place next to landscapes dotted with jewel coloured crocus and bright sunny daffodils; all of a sudden stepping out in your favourite black number can make you feel like the woman that spring forgot. There’s a simple fix though, update your look with splashes of cream and white.

Des Petits Hauts has raised the bar for wearable feminine tailoring this season. All the pieces in the Des Petits Hauts collection at Feather & Stitch tie together and can be mixed and matched to suit your mood. Here Fi has layered the Kaboul blouse and Ariane cardigan over our signature DL1961 jeans. The blouse is long sleeved and made from 100% cotton so it is perfect for covering up in the sun this summer, it feels very light when worn due mainly to it’s loose fit and demi sheer quality. The double star details dotted all over the blouse give it a modern look that is juxtaposed by the cheese cloth appearance of the cotton. It’s a nod to the 70’s and ties in brilliantly with the 70’s revival trend that’s filtering down to the highstreet by way of high waisted flared jeans.

Des Petits Hauts, Liebeskind, Billi Bi, DL Jeans

The Ariane cardigan will double as a summer jacket and is one of those essential pieces that every woman needs in her wardrobe. It’s the summer equivalent of winter’s leather jacket. As such we expect a lot from it, it needs to be tactile and soft, hang perfectly and add a touch of glamour to our look; all of which the Ariane cardi does with aplomb. The gold lurex thread running through the cotton brings understated glamour to this piece. Being knitted cotton it has a little stretch in the fabric so it will need a delicate wash cycle to keep it in shape and looking like new. I suggest washing it at a low temperature and then laying it out flat to dry. Here’s my tip if you have underfloor heating: lay a large pale or white towel on the floor, place the damp item on top then gently pull the fabric back into shape. Leave it there overnight and voila, dry knits with no crease marks or saggy hems.

Des Petits Hauts, Billi Bi, Liebeskind, DL1961

Our Liebeskind bags have been an instant hit with our clients this season. We have only one of these tan totes left in stock which isn’t surprising considering once you touch the leather the urge to hug it is hard to resist.

It was a busy day in the boutique when we shot this look and heels simply wouldn’t have cut it, so Fi’s choice of Billi Bi footwear for this outfit is perfect. Flat, practical and comfortable while the snakeskin gives them a fashion edge.

Launching our Outfit of the Week

Exciting things are happening at Feather & Stitch HQ this spring. Not only are our rails now crammed with beautiful new clothes with more on the way, we’re also launching a new feature on the blog which will see both myself and our founder Fiona Sanderson (Fi to friends) highlighting our favourite picks from the SS15 collection. We’re not just talking about the pieces we love we’re styling them too so that you can better see how the collection works for real women. Our photographs for these features are purposefully natural and have not been photoshopped.

Fi, like so many of our clientele is a working mother. Anyone with children, indeed anyone who is close to someone with children knows the very real struggle we can go through to keep our sense of identity after childbirth. There is a temptation to hide in maternity jeans and old shapeless tops but the loss of personal style in this manner can be damaging, not just personally but professionally too. We offer a personal styling service at Feather & Stitch which aims to deliver advice tailored to your individual needs. We want to imbue our clients with a startling confidence in their own unique sense of style. We are on your side ladies and whether you’re running errands, lunching with friends or nailing a presentation at work we want you to look amazing.

So drumroll please… here is our founder in her outfit of the week debut.

Fringed cashmere

Fringing is BIG news this season. You will see it cropping up on bags, tops, jackets and kimonos. Here Fi has paired the Dominique fringed cardigan by 360ºSweater with the Mai blouse from Des Petits Hauts. The blouse is a cotton-linen mix and has long sleeves, perfect for keeping you warm in early spring. The cardigan is both wonderfully soft and warm as you’d expect from 100% cashmere, but the waterfall opening and fringing on the front sets it apart from other cardigans we’ve seen.

Neutrals and blush pinks take centre stage this season too. We have shades to suit every skin tone as well as accessories such as gold dusted belts to give each outfit a little sparkle and polish.

DL1961 Jeans have proved themselves a firm favourite with our clients over the last season and they will be coming back in spring with more colours and styles added later this month. The shaping technology of their four-way stretch denim is the best we’ve seen in recent years.

Liebeskind is another of our favourite brands back for SS15. We can’t get enough of the buttery soft leather synonymous with this brand and the new pastel shades are just dreamy. Here Fi is carrying the Elena bag in powder rose. We have a limited quantity of Liebeskind in stock so to avoid disappointment I suggest a swift and decisive swoop through our leather goods online and in store. Which brings me to Fi’s footwear. These Billi Bi Snakeskin Chelsea Boots are now in final sale and will be perfect festival goers this summer. Wear them with our Des Petits Hauts dresses for a Parisienne look.
